By Kefa Rabah, krabah@globalopenversity.org Dec. 19, 2010 GTS Institute

Introduction

Openfiler is a powerful, intuitive browser-based network storage software distribution. Openfiler delivers file-based Network Attached Storage and block-based Storage Area Networking in a single framework. It’s built on the rPath Linux metadistribution and is distributed as a stand-alone Linux distribution. The entire software stack interfaces with third-party software that is all open source.

File-based networking protocols supported by Openfiler include: NFS, SMB/CIFS, HTTP/WebDAV and FTP. Network directories supported by Openfiler include NIS, LDAP (with support for SMB/CIFS encrypted passwords), Active Directory (in native and mixed modes) and Hesiod. Authentication protocols include Kerberos 5.

Openfiler is OS software for implementing or configuring iSCSI devices. It includes support for volume-based partitioning, iSCSI (target and initiator), scheduled snapshots, resource quota, and a single unified interface for share management which makes allocating shares for various network file-system protocols a breeze.

Internet SCSI (iSCSI) is a network protocol that allows you to use of the SCSI protocol over TCP/IP networks. It is good alternative to Fibre Channel-based SANs. You can easily manage, mount and format iSCSI Volume under Linux. It allows access to SAN storage over Ethernet. Open-iSCSI project is a high-performance, transport independent, multi-platform implementation of iSCSI. Open-iSCSI is partitioned into user and kernel parts. In this case you can build a complete shared iSCSI SAN for your ESX 4 infrastructure

As a good example, suppose your company doesn’t have SAN storage. But you want a shared disk for some of your network applications like highly-available Webserver or database applications. You can use Openfiler iSCSI storage. With Openfiler you can create an iSCSI target. And by installing the proper iSCSI initiator on the client you can mount the Openfiler’s iSCSI target on your client. In background it’s just RedHat RHEL distro.

Hands-on Lab Session

In this Hands-on lab session, you will learn how to install & configure Openfiler share storage solution. You’ll also learn how to deploy Openfiler iSCSI shared storage target. I’ll also show you how to install and configure iSCSI initiator (client) on a Linux CentOS-5 server. Finally, you’ll learn how to mount the Openfiler’s iSCSI target on the CentOS client, and perform some tasks on it. The entire lab training was performed on VMware. Upon completion of this hands-on lab session, you should have gained expertise and skills required to build, deploy and run your Openfiler server.

1.0 Introduction

In this Hands-on Labs session, we’re going to learn how to install and configure the Linux Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) 64-bit server option which we then use to install openEMR. You can also use the Ubuntu 20.04 LTS Desktop if desired.

OpenEMR is a free Open source, Practice management, Electronic Medical Records, prescription writing and medical billing application. These programs are also referred to as electronic health records. OpenEMR is licensed under the General Gnu Public License (General GPL). It is a free open source replacement for medical applications such as Medical Manager, Health Pro, and Misys. It features support for EDI billing to clearing houses such as Availity, MD-Online, MedAvant and ZirMED using ANSI X12.

OpenEMR was originally developed by Synitech and version 1.0 was released in June 2001 as MP Pro (MedicalPractice Professional). Much of the code was then reworked for HIPAA compliance and improved security, and the product was reintroduced as OpenEMR version 1.3 a year later, in July 2002. You can install openEMR on Unix-like systems (Linux, UNIX, and BSD systems), Microsoft systems, Mac OS X and other platforms. In this you’ll learn how to install openEMR on Linux distros that are open source.

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition: Lean, fast and powerful – Ubuntu Server delivers services reliably, predictably and economically – and easily integrates with your existing infrastructure. It has almost 100 open-source and proprietary application providers certifying their programs on Ubuntu Server Edition. Ubuntu 10.04 includes Alfresco, Ingres, IBM, VMware, Yahoo and Zimbra. It also includes improved installation and management tools for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon EC2.

Debian 5 or Lenny is based on the 2.6.25 Linux kernel. For the desktop, Lenny supports both KDE 3.5.9 and GNOME 2.20.1.1. It also includes the most recent versions of many popular end-user software applications. These include: Firefox 3.01, OpenOffice 2.4.1, and Evolution 2.22.3.1. Lenny is also excellent for developer. It all includes the best developer and server programs. For example, Lenny comes with glibc 2.7 and Samba 3.2.

Hands-on Lab Solution:

In this Hands-on Lab session, you’ll learn how to setup virtual network on VMware (you may also use any other virtual machines like MS VirtualPC, Linux Xen, or VirtualBox from Oracle, or Citrix XenServer). In this lab session, we’ll concentrate on installing Linux ubuntu 10.04 LTS server which we then use to install and configure openEMR clinical management application. After completing the initial installation I’ll show you how to install LAMP server and openSSH as pre-requisites for openEMR application. You will also learn how to setup secure MySQL database server. Webmin, although not required, is a useful admin tool that I’ll show you how to install. You’ll also have opportunity to carryout some lab assignments at the end of this training. After completion of this lab session, you should have gained enough skills to install and setup openEMR on Linux Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server or Desktop.

In Ubuntu distro installation can either be done in desktop or command line. However, for Debian, a command-line install is recommended.

1.0 Introduction

In this Hands-on Labs session, we’re going to learn how to install and configure the Linux Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) 64-bit server option which we then use to install KnowledgeTree DMS CE. Canonical has high hopes that Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, will easily become the platform of choice for anybody who intends to build and deploy large-scale infrastructure, whether you’re trying to build the next Facebook, or the next Google, or the next eBay.

KnowledgeTree is PHP-based, open source document management software that is easy to install and use across a broad range of organizations. The features included in the community edition – including workflow, version control and audit trails – help manage the document lifecycle, promote collaboration, reduce paper and ensure compliance. KnowledgeTree Community Edition is licensed under the GNU GPL version 3.

Solution

In this Hands-on Lab session, you’ll learn how to setup virtual network on VMware (you may also use any other virtual machines like MS VirtualPC, Linux Xen, or VirtualBox from Sun). In this lab session, we’ll concentrate on installing KnowledgeTree DMS on a clean install Linux Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64-bit Server. You will learn how to install and configure Webmin to help with configuring DNS server. I’ll also show you how to setup static IP address which is required for deploying a DNS server. Finally, we’ll go through a step-by-step process to install KnowledgeTree CE DMS. You’ll also have opportunity to do some assignment at the end of the lab session. Upon completion of the hands-on lab you’ll have gained a competency level and a capability to be able to plan design implement and deploy a website solution using KnowledgeTree DMS.

Assumptions

Introduction

EUCALYPTUS – Elastic Utility Computing Architecture for Linking Your Programs To Useful Systems — is an open-source software infrastructure for implementing Elastic/Utility/Cloud computing using computing clusters and/or workstation farms. The current interface to EUCALYPTUS is interface-compatible with Amazon.com’s EC2 (arguably the most commercially successful Cloud computing service), but the infrastructure is designed to be modified and extended so that multiple client-side interfaces can be supported. In addition, EUCALYPTUS is implemented using commonly-available Linux tools and basic web service technology making it easy to install and maintain.

Eucalyptus Systems delivers private cloud software. This is infrastructure software that enables enterprises and government agencies to establish their own cloud computing environments. With Eucalyptus, customers make more efficient use of their computing capacity, thus increasing productivity and innovation, deploying new applications faster, and protecting sensitive data while making savings in capital expenditure. Private clouds let’s say you want a cloud like infrastructure for architectural purposes but you want it to run on your own hardware in your own secure environment.

Eucalyptus is an open source solution that originates from an NSF funded research project at University of California, Santa Barbara. The open source model is generally considered a superior way of creating infrastructure software. Innovation is faster, users and customers have more freedom and flexibility, lock-in is avoided, and secondary benefits accrue from the massive ecosystems that naturally evolve around the most prolific open source products.

Finally, it’s imported to note that the cloud platform itself is modularized and therefore support multiple APIs and virtualization environments. Thus while the initial versions of the system supported the AWS APIs and Xen hypervisor platform, Eucalyptus is designed to support multiple APIs and virtualization environments simultaneously, in the same cloud.

Hands on Lab Session

In this Hands-on lab session you’ll learn how to build and run your own private cloud with Eucalyptus 2.0 systems on Linux CentOS-5.5. It’s assumed that you know how to install, configure and upgrade CentOS-5 server and have a good knowledge working with Linux distros. You’re expected to have at least two Linux boxes (physical or virtual machines), one to install your front-end cloud controller and the other to install the node controller. You’ll learn how to install and configure Eucalyptus cloud on the front-end and nodes. How install and setup Euca2ools for manipulating cloud images. How to build bundle and upload VM images to the cloud. And finally, how to deploy and run these images. In this lab you’ll learn how to build bundle and upload Tinylinux and Ubuntu 9.04 images. Upon completion of this lab session you should have gained skills and expertise to enable you to build and deploy VM servers and your private cloud with Eucalyptus 2.0 system. The entire lab session was performed using VMware to deploy the servers.

Assumptions:

1. It’s assumed that you have a good understanding of Linux operating system and its working environment. It’s also assumed that you know how to install and configure Linux CentOS-5 server, if not go ahead and pop over to Docstoc.com and check out a good hands-on manual entitled “Step-By-Step Install Guide Linux CentOS-5 Server” to get you started.

Introduction

In computing, Xen® hypervisor is a virtual-machine monitor for IA-32, x86-64, Itanium and PowerPC 970 architectures. It allows several guest operating systems to execute on the same computer hardware concurrently. The University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory developed the first versions of Xen; as of 2010 the Xen community develops and maintains Xen as free software, licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).

Xen systems have a structure with the Xen hypervisor as the lowest and most privileged layer. Above this layer come one or more guest operating systems, which the hypervisor schedules across the physical CPUs. The first guest operating system, called in Xen terminology “domain 0″ (dom0), boots automatically when the hypervisor boots and receives special management privileges and direct access to all physical hardware by default. The system administrator can log into dom0 in order to manage any further guest operating systems, called “domain U” (domU) in Xen terminology.

Xen is a free open source software virtual machine monitor for Intel / PowerPC architectures. It is software that runs on a host operating system and allows several guest operating systems to be run on top of the host on the same computer hardware at the same time (just like VMWare software). Luckily Installing and managing XEN is quite easy under Linux openSUSE 11.3 Server.

The openSUSE project is a worldwide effort that promotes the use of Linux everywhere. OpenSUSE creates one of the world’s best Linux distributions, working together in an open, transparent and friendly manner as part of the worldwide Free and Open Source Software community. The latest release, openSUSE 11.3, features new and massively improved versions of all useful server and desktop applications. It comes with more than 1,000 open source applications. The openSUSE distribution is a stable, easy to use and complete multi-purpose distribution. It is aimed for users and developers working on desktop or server. It’s great for beginners, experienced users and ultra geeks, short it’s perfect for everybody! openSUSE is also the base for Novell’s award-winning SUSE Linux Enterprise products.

Fedora is a Linux-based operating system that brings the latest in free and open source software to your desktop, laptop and server, and gives you access to thousands of different open source applications. This helpful, user-friendly operating system is built by people across the globe; who work together as a community to create the Fedora Project. Fedora 13 (Goddard) is filled with improvements that make Linux better than ever for all types of users. Here are a few of the new things you can expect to see when you try out Fedora 13.

Introduction

sipXecs open source unified communications project developed by SIPfoundry. sipXecs is excellent selection for enterprises or individual who’re looking to replace your aging (IP) PBX with an all software modern communications solution that scales to mid-size and large enterprise. SIPfoundry is an open source community dedicated to the development of SIP and XMPP based communications solutions.

Currently, sipX is the leading open source IP PBX in terms of scalability, robustness and ease of use. The sipX IP PBX has been successfully deployed in a lot of places. The largest known installation serves more than 5,000 users connected to one redundant (HA) system. Small installations go all the way down to a few users served by very low cost hardware.

A Private Branch Exchange (PBX) or a Private Automatic Branch Exchange (PABX – which is out of fashion since all modern day PBXs are automatic), is a phone switch serving a business or organization and is usually located on the organization’s premises. The PBX provides phone services including internal calling, and access to the public switched telephone network. It allows a small number of outside lines to be shared among all of the people of the organization. Advanced PBX phone switches sometimes provide auto-attendant, voice-mail, and ACD (automatic call distribution) services for the organization.

Hands-on Labs Session

In this hands-on lab, you will learn how to install & configure your first sipXecs iPBX VoIP Telephony based on Linux CentOS 5.5 machine and use it to deploy your own private PBX based VoIP system. It’s assumed that you are comfortable working with Linux distros, especially CentOS-5, which is the core OS for sipXecs. You’ll also learn how to install, configure and integrate sipXecs with Openfire. Its’ a great opportunity to get up to speed on how sipXecs is at the forefront of open source enterprise VoIP telephony development and how you can build and run your own iPBX Telephony system that’s cost-effective and can even save you money with some of its powerful integration with Openfire etc or even start your own private VoIP telephony business. Finlly you’ll earn how to install sipXecs cluster for high availability. Upon completion of this hands-on lab session you should have gained a competency and skills necessary to install and configure various components of sipXecs system.

Introduction

Openfire is a real time collaboration (RTC) server licensed under the Open Source GPL. It uses the only widely adopted open protocol for instant messaging, XMPP (also called Jabber) server written in Java. Openfire is incredibly easy to setup and administer, but offers rock-solid security and performance.

Most administration of the server is done through a web interface, which runs on the ports 9090 (HTTP) and 9091 (HTTPS) by default. Administrators can connect from anywhere and edit the server’s settings, add and delete users, conference rooms, and so forth.

Hands-on Lab Session

This lab session we present case scenario, where you want to set up your own private chat network for friends or family, or maybe your company uses the major chat providers like AIM, Yahoo, MSN, or Google for interoffice communication, but you want more control and to keep the network traffic inside your LAN or within the private enterprise network. Whatever your case may be, this hand-on lab session will show you how to do it with Ignite Realtime’s Openfire Jabber Server for Linux and Jabber client’s running on Linux box and Windows machine. It’s assumed that you know how to install Linux distros, in this case Linux CentOS-5, or already have one in place. It’s further assumed that you know how to install and configure DNS and Sendmail servers on Linux.
